Ethan Corey

Technical Assistant

Ethan Corey is currently in his 3rd year at Florida State University studying biomedical engineering. Ethan is conducting research with the FSU department of chemistry and biochemistry working on synthesizing a novel polymer material. He has kept his grades above a 3.8 GPA in his time at Florida State University while conducting research and practicing martial arts.

Ethan started practicing martial arts six years ago at Better Families Through Tae Kwon Do in Miami, Florida under the instruction of Grandmaster Diego Perez and Master Marybeth Klock-Perez. At Better Families, he studied Jhoon Rhee Tae Kwon Do and joined the competition team where he placed first as an under-belt in various martial arts tournaments such as the US Open and the Pan American International. Ethan assisted in instructing classes, giving individual tutoring, and leading their summer camp programs. In December of 2018 he received his black belt and this past December of 2021 he tested for his second dan despite not being in person and training through Zoom classes which he started while at a research program over the summer with the Georgia Institute of Technology. Ethan came to Florida State University in 2019 and found the Cuong Nhu Bamboo Dojo while looking for a martial arts club to join. After the first visit, Ethan decided that Cuong Nhu would be his choice for the next martial arts style he wanted to explore.

After two years of training in Cuong Nhu, he has now assumed a leadership position along with other assistances under Master Vu Trinh and Sensei Alanna in the club’s management and in the training of the new and lower rank students. Ethan has been to and encouraged people to go to various events with the university to keep our club in good standing such as tournaments, leadership training, other clubs’ events, and volunteer events. Most recently, during the Fall semester of 2021, Ethan and another student from the Bamboo Dojo has participated in a martial tournament and they both won first place. Ethan was in the Kata competition and the other was in the Kumite division. After training for the past two and a half years he is now the club's Vice-President among those higher-ranking students in the bamboo dojo. Ethan now is a green belt with two brown stripes. As a brown Belt candidate, he is working very hard to prepare for his next higher level. Due to his previous experience and current position as a brown belt candidate, he has started, along with other assistants from the Bamboo dojo, assisting Master Vu Trinh and Sensei Alanna. He was assigned to lead the new student group one day a week during the Fall semester under Master Vu’s guidance, successfully giving them a solid foundation in our rapidly growing dojo.
